Introduction
We are a Buddhist organization that practices the teachings of the Buddha through daily life practice, realizing the true value of life.
Yangwoo Buddhism
The Yangwoo Buddhism foundation is a lay Buddhist order that upholds the principles of lay Buddhism.
Prominent figures representing lay Buddhism include Vimalakīrti from the Vimalakirti Sutra, Sudhana from the Avatamsaka Sutra, and Queen Srimala from the Srimaladevi-sutra. The Yangwoo Buddhism continues this tradition of lay Buddhism by pursuing both material abundance and fundamental enlightenment while remaining in the secular world through what we call inner renunciation.
When the Buddha appeared in the world 2,500 years ago, the path to liberation—the way to cut off the root of suffering—was opened to humankind. The truth taught by Buddha is the great Mahayana path of simultaneous enlightenment for oneself and others. However, even in this age of advanced science, suffering has not disappeared, and humanity continues to wander in search of the way. The Yangwoo Buddhism has systematized the Buddha’s teachings and established a practical methodology suited to the modern lifestyle and level of understanding.
The Yangwoo Buddhism’s “Practice of Great Freedom in Daily Life” clearly presents a concrete method for realizing both material fulfillment and spiritual awakening without leaving the secular world. It breaks through the limitations of the conventional renunciation that departs from worldly life, and instead achieves inner renunciation through daily living. In this way, all obstacles and sufferings of the world become the very foundation for self-completion, allowing anyone to transcend all discriminations and attain liberation—the essence of Mahayana practice.

The Five Core Doctrines of Yangwoo Buddhism
Yangwoo Buddhism pursues practice within daily life.
There is no need to leave the secular world or become a monk, for every moment of the 24 hours in a day can become a part of one’s cultivation. This leads to rapid progress in practice.
To achieve this, Yangwoo Buddhism upholds five core doctrines: Hoehyang, Kyungsu , Sasa Wanseong, Ilche Je-beop, Sasa Mu-ae
Hoehyang
Kyungsoo
Sasa Wanseong
lche Je-beop
Sasa Mu-ae
Hoehyang
The belief that all knowledge, wealth, and blessings obtained in this world should be developed and returned for the benefit of society.
Kyungsoo
The doctrine of dedicating oneself fully to the benefit of the world, even without clinging to one’s own life.
Sasa Wanseong
The idea that when every act is performed with a pure and upright mind, the accumulation of such right actions leads to liberation.
lche Je-beop
The belief that one attains liberation by comprehending all the laws and truths of the universe—the realization of all-encompassing wisdom.
Sasa Mu-ae
The teaching that one should be free from all obstacles and attachments—whether visible or invisible, material or immaterial.

The Foundational Scripture
A “foundational scripture” refers to a sutra that one believes in and relies upon until attaining enlightenment—a root sutra that supports both faith and doctrine. The foundational scripture of Yangwoo Buddhism is the Vimalakirti Sutra.
The Vimalakirti Sutra is a representative Mahayana sutra that reveals the state of unobstructed and boundless enlightenment attained by the lay practitioner Vimalakirti in the midst of secular life, as well as the methods to achieve it.
This sutra teaches practitioners who have reached the level of bodhisattvas and are on the verge of complete liberation, having already perfected both virtue and wisdom. It reveals the highest state of Buddhism.
The lay Buddhist practice of the Mahayana Buddhism and the “practice within daily life” of Yangwoo Buddhism are both deeply rooted in this sutra.
